If you love festivals (or think you might), then Greater Lansing is one of the best places in Michigan to explore, curate and hone your festival repertoire! I absolutely adore festivals! It seems I’m always planning toward or around one, no matter what time of year it is. I’ve lived in Lansing for more than 30 years, and the festival culture here is one of the coolest things about this region.
One for all
The Lansing area is currently home to more than 50 annual festivals that are characteristically chockfull of music, food, drinks, art—you name it, and you can probably find a festival that celebrates it. Talk about variety, one can make merry about beer, mint, maple syrup, jazz, blues, folk, cars, holidays, scrap metal, more beer—the opportunities for experiences are endless. During the warmer months, there are so many festivals, it’s hard to decide which one to attend, and it’s easy to over book.
Plenty of festivals have already happened this year, and hopefully you attended some (or all) of them. But watch out because spring has arrived, and we are sliding into “festival season,” which is an awesome wild ride you don’t want to miss. As you are reading this, organizers and volunteers are busily preparing for the nearly 20 festivals to launch in May and June alone. If it’s festivals you crave, Greater Lansing’s got a lineup that you are going to love.
Festival goers know all of the things that make festivals so awesome, but if you are a newbie here’s a few reasons why you should attend: (1) they’re where like meets like, where everyone has a little bit of something in common whether it’s a love of Reggae or folk music, a passion for craft beer and food trucks or simply the joy of people watching; (2) pretty much anything goes—bring your guitar, your hula hoop, your kazoo, your skateboard—it’s all good; (3) wear what you love—string those flowers in your hair, dig out those rainbow suspenders and the bow tie, go ahead and put on that beer-can hat; (4) fun abounds—there are photo ops, cool and weird people, eats you’ve never tried, bands you’ve never heard, experiences you’ve never had; (4) festivals are the bomb.
