Wind River Screening & Discussion
Saturday, January 20th, 1 pm - 4 pm
Michigan History Center, 702 W. Kalamazoo St., Lansing
The Michigan History Center continues its Rock Your Mocs series in January and February with a special screening of the 2017 feature film Wind River, followed by a panel discussion. This program is FREE and open to the public.
The film Wind River introduces mainstream American audiences to an epidemic plaguing native communities in North America today: missing and murdered indigenous women. The film’s story is set on a present day reservation, and in addition to confronting the issue of missing women, it looks at the complexities of life in Indian country today and the struggles to overcome over two centuries of forced assimilation and eradication of indigenous culture and traditions.
In this special three-hour program, program facilitators will use a screening Wind River to set the stage for a much larger and more in-depth discussion on the contemporary Native issues touched on in the film. After the screening, Eric Hemenway, Director of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians Department of Repatriation, Archives and Records, will host a group discussion about the film and moderate a panel discussion that will provide more in-depth information regarding missing Native women in Michigan.
Please be advised that this film is Rated R for strong violence, disturbing images, and language and is not recommended for children 17 and under.
